File sharing is a way of swapping files between computers over the Internet. The expression “file sharing” can mean disk sharing or server sharing amongst computers on a restricted network. Since the launch of high-speed Internet, the performance of file sharing relates to a vast number of global Internet users. Many times, file sharing is ridiculed and thought of as a means of copyright infringement. Situations of music and movie files being shared have been the cause of copyright violation cases being taken to court with a tad of success in the United States.

File sharing has been evident ever since people have been using computers and moving information from one computer to another. In the beginning, floppy disks were the only means of sharing information and files. Soon after, computers could network together and basic chat activities became a familiar way of sharing data.

The inauguration of dial-up Internet brought about email and messaging faculties. In addition, instant messaging and email substantiated their usefulness for computer users to contact each other and supplied a means of basic file transfers. The initial attachments were extremely restricted in size, and at first nothing more than a one-page document could be transferred.
